Telling Special Stories is my authorial project for this year. In 2020 I want to tell more stories of other families with my photography. 📸
I believe every family deserves to be celebrated, because what matters in life is the love that exists between people 💕.
So, I will do 12 free sessions for 12 different families. One for each month of the year!
The January edition I told the Porto Family story. A family of two children and a health condition:
Come with me to know this story:
Natalie is the mother of two beautiful children. But before she even planned to become a mother, life threw her a curveball when she was diagnosed with ITP (Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura) at only 15 years old. She tried several treatments, but her platelet count never hit the normal level.
During both pregnancies, Natalie and the babies lives were at risk.Because of her ITP diagnosis, she lost weight instead of gaining it during her last pregnancy, 8kg to be exact. Natalie also had labor with no analgesia or anesthesia because it could increase her risks and be more harmful than good. No doubt at all that these must have been hard times for Natalie and Eduardo, her husband.
Both babies were born with ITP and stayed in the ICU for a while.
When Ana Julia, her first child was born, the doctors tried many different treatments without success. Natalie decided to ask the hospital to remove Ana Julia from the ICU and take her home to continue her treatment. It may sound like a reckless decision, but she went through so much with this disease that she knew that keeping her baby in the ICU would not be the best decision.
Ana Julia started to develop her own antibodies at 8 months of age, and her second son, Miguel at 5 months of age. They both went through a treatment where they received platelet transfusion and today both are finally cured 🙂
Natalie, the mom, still have this condition. Her ITP diagnosis even impacted the visa process for coming to Canada. She had to consult specialists to confirm that she would not bring costs to the canadian health system, which in the end did not end up being that way, as she had hyperemesis gravidarum and then, Natalie had to take many medications and go several times to the hospital during her second pregnancy. Although Natalie still have to take care of her platelet levels, they are all healthy nowadays!
Natalie, Eduardo, Ana Julia and Miguel are a beautiful and an inspiring family 💛
